Motorola Edge+ (2020) – A Flagship Revival with Cutting-Edge Features
Motorola made a striking return to the flagship smartphone segment in 2020 with the launch of the Motorola Edge+. This device marked a bold step forward for the brand, offering top-tier specifications, a stunning design, and premium features that rivaled competitors like Samsung, Apple, and OnePlus. With its curved-edge display, powerful Snapdragon processor, and 108MP camera, the Motorola Edge+ was an ambitious attempt to reclaim a spot in the high-end smartphone market.
Design and Display – A Curved Beauty
One of the standout features of the Motorola Edge+ was its 6.7-inch Endless Edge OLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate. The FHD+ (2340 × 1080 pixels) resolution ensured sharp and vibrant visuals, while HDR10+ support enhanced colors and contrast, making it ideal for media consumption. The extreme curved edges not only added to its aesthetics but also provided functionality, allowing users to interact with notifications, app shortcuts, and gaming triggers.
The phone had a glass front and back with an aluminum frame, giving it a premium feel. However, it lacked an official IP rating for water resistance, which was a downside compared to competitors.
Performance – A True Powerhouse
Under the hood, the Motorola Edge+ packed the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset, paired with 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.0 storage. This powerful combination ensured seamless multitasking, smooth gaming, and excellent overall performance. The device came with Android 10 out of the box, featuring a near-stock Android experience with a few Moto customizations.
The Adreno 650 GPU provided excellent graphics rendering, making the Motorola Edge+ a great choice for gamers. Features like Moto Gametime and stereo speakers with Waves audio tuning enhanced the gaming and entertainment experience.
Camera – 108MP Excellence
One of the biggest highlights of the Motorola Edge+ was its 108MP primary sensor with OIS (Optical Image Stabilization). This camera allowed for stunningly detailed shots with pixel binning technology, which merged multiple pixels for better low-light performance.
The phone also featured:
- 16MP ultra-wide sensor with a 117° field of view
- 8MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom and OIS
- Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor for better depth detection
For selfies, the 25MP front camera delivered crisp and vibrant photos, supported by AI enhancements. The device could also record 6K videos, a rare feature in 2020.
Battery and Charging – All-Day Power
With a 5000mAh battery, the Motorola Edge+ delivered impressive endurance, lasting more than a day on a single charge. The device supported 18W wired fast charging, 15W wireless charging, and 5W reverse wireless charging. However, compared to competitors offering faster charging speeds, Motorola’s 18W wired charging felt somewhat slow.
Connectivity and Other Features
The Motorola Edge+ was one of the first 5G-capable devices, ensuring future-proof connectivity. It also included Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.1, an in-display fingerprint scanner, and a 3.5mm headphone jack, making it a well-rounded flagship.
Final Verdict
The Motorola Edge+ was a bold attempt by Motorola to re-enter the premium smartphone market. With its stunning curved display, powerful performance, and impressive camera setup, it stood out in the crowded flagship space. However, the lack of an official IP rating, slow charging speeds, and limited software updates were drawbacks.
Despite these shortcomings, the Motorola Edge+ (2020) was a flagship that brought Motorola back into the high-end smartphone conversation and laid the groundwork for future premium models.
